{"id":9203,"date":"2026-03-05T21:01:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T21:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/meta-lied-smart-glasses-privacy-class-action-lawsuit\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T21:01:00","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T21:01:00","slug":"meta-lied-smart-glasses-privacy-class-action-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/meta-lied-smart-glasses-privacy-class-action-lawsuit\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta Lied About Its Smart Glasses Protecting User Privacy, New Class Action Lawsuit Claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Meta may have sold seven million of its Ray-Ban smart glasses in 2025 alone \u2014 but likely didn\u2019t anticipate the outpouring of criticism when a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svd.se\/a\/K8nrV4\/metas-ai-smart-glasses-and-data-privacy-concerns-workers-say-we-see-everything\">recent investigation<\/a> by Swedish newspapers\u00a0<em>Svenska Dagbladet<\/em> and\u00a0<em>G\u00f6teborgs-Posten<\/em> revealed that Meta\u2019s subcontracted data annotators in Nairobi, Kenya, could\u2019ve been watching users through their glasses\u2019 cameras as <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/meta-disturbing-smart-glasses\">they went to the bathroom or had sex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The damning revelations shed light on the AI industry\u2019s reliance on overseas labor for data labeling to train their models, a hidden reality glossed over in marketing materials by one of the biggest tech companies in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Just days after the investigation was published, Meta has been hit with a class action lawsuit, which accuses the company of woefully misleading its customers by claiming that it had put privacy front and center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cNo reasonable consumer would understand \u2018designed for privacy, controlled by you\u2019 and similar promises like \u2018built for your privacy\u2019 to mean that deeply personal footage from inside their homes would be viewed and catalogued by human workers overseas,\u201d reads the lawsuit, which was obtained by <em>Futurism<\/em> and filed in a San Francisco district court on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cMeta chose to make privacy the centerpiece of its pervasive marketing campaign while concealing the facts that reveal those promises to be false,\u201d the lawsuit charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cYou cannot market a product as \u2018built for privacy\u2019 and then funnel footage of people\u2019s intimate moments to contract workers without their knowledge,\u201d said Yana Hart, partner at Clarkson Law Firm, which filed the lawsuit, in a statement. \u201cMeta made privacy the centerpiece of its marketing campaign because it knew consumers would never buy these glasses if they knew the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The lawsuit \u201cseeks to hold Meta responsible for its affirmatively false advertising and failure to disclose the true nature of surveillance and its connection to the company\u2019s AI data collection pipeline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">A Meta spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/social-media\/meta-hit-with-a-class-action-lawsuit-over-smart-glasses-privacy-claims-182846817.html?guccounter=1\">told <em>Engadget<\/em><\/a> that data from its glasses may end up in the hands of human contractors, but declined to respond to the lawsuit\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The spokesperson also claimed that \u201cunless users choose to share media they\u2019ve captured with Meta or others, that media stays on the user\u2019s device.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">However, what Meta fails to explain is that using the devices\u2019 core AI features without authorizing human contractors in Kenya to watch the resulting footage is impossible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The lawsuit claims Meta did not adequately disclose that intimate footage could be reviewed and annotated by a human contractor.
