The AI industry is no stranger to bad press, from fears over sweeping job losses<\/a> to a burgeoning mental health crisis<\/a>, suicide<\/a> and even murder<\/a> linked to the tech.<\/p>\n

But what\u2019s really top of mind for AI tech leaders, according to new reporting by The Economist<\/em><\/a>, is that their tech could soon be implicated in a Chernobyl-style event \u2014 referring to the 1986 catastrophe that\u2019s now nearly synonymous with the failings of the nuclear industry.<\/p>\n

Experts have warned that as the AI industry continues to permeate society, the risks of a horrific and hyper-visible tragedy tainting the entire space are becoming significant.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Hindenburg disaster destroyed global interest in airships; it was a dead technology from that point on, and a similar moment is a real risk for AI,\u201d Michael Wooldridge, a professor of computer science at Oxford University, told The Guardian<\/em><\/a> last month.<\/p>\n

The possibility is looming particularly large as AI becomes deeply interwoven in the Trump administration\u2019s war on Iran, with the Pentagon reportedly using Anthropic\u2019s Claude<\/a> to select targets for strikes.<\/p>\n

If that sounds like a recipe for disaster, you\u2019re not alone. After the US military killed more than 160 people, including dozens of children when it blew up an Iranian elementary school during the early hours of the conflict, it\u2019s refused to say<\/a> whether AI was used to plan the strike.<\/p>\n

And many more risk vectors are looming. There\u2019s the ever-present threat of AI being used to develop bioweapons, a topic AI researchers have openly discussed for years<\/a> now, with chatbots from companies like Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI<\/a> happily obeying bioweapon-related requests<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The tech is also supercharging the spread of malware and ransomware<\/a>, aiding in mass phishing campaigns<\/a>, and exploiting network vulnerabilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Put it all together, and tech leaders fear that a Chernobyl-style crisis triggered by AI is no longer a question of if, but when.<\/p>\n

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned<\/a> in a sprawling, 19,000-word essay<\/a> earlier this year that \u201chumanity is about to be handed almost unimaginable power, and it is deeply unclear whether our social, political, and technological systems possess the maturity to wield it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his essay, Amodei listed a number of existential dangers AI poses, from the \u201cconcentration of economic power\u201d to AIs developing dangerous bioweapons or \u201csuperior\u201d military weapons.<\/p>\n

After years of dire warnings, the situation appears to be coming to a head under the bellicose power of the Trump administration. Top officials maintain that concerns over AI safety are nothing more than \u201chand-wringing<\/a>,\u201d per vice president JD Vance, by \u201cleft-wing nut jobs<\/a>,\u201d in the words of defense secretary Pete Hegseth.<\/p>\n

Hegseth has also vowed earlier this year to \u201caccelerate like hell<\/a>\u201d \u2014 a dangerous game that could have potentially disastrous consequences, if much of the AI research community and the industry\u2019s top leaders\u2019 warnings are anything to go by.<\/p>\n
