{"id":9354,"date":"2026-03-11T18:18:22","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T18:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/grammarly-pulls-down-expert-review-feature\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T18:18:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T18:18:22","slug":"grammarly-pulls-down-expert-review-feature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musictechohio.online\/site\/grammarly-pulls-down-expert-review-feature\/","title":{"rendered":"Grammarly Is Pulling Down Its Explosively Controversial Feature That Impersonates Writers Without Their Permission"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Grammarly infuriated journalists, authors, and academics with its \u201cExpert Review\u201d feature, which impersonated writers \u2014 both <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/grammarly-ai-reviews\">dead and alive<\/a> \u2014 without their permission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">In Grammar\u2019s telling, the tool allows users to \u201ctake your writing to the next level\u201d by making suggestions inspired by \u201cleading professionals, authors, and subject-matter experts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The feature, which was only accessible beyond a free trial via the company\u2019s $12-a-month Pro subscription, caused an explosively negative reaction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cYou rapacious information and identity thieves better get ready for me to go full McConaughey on you,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.platformer.news\/grammarly-expert-review-reviewed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seethed<\/a> tech journalist Kara Swisher, whose advice the feature claimed to offer. \u201cAlso, you suck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Now, Shishir Mehrotra, CEO of Grammarly\u2019s owner Superhuman, has announced that the company is \u201cdisabling\u201d the offending feature \u201cwhile we reimagine the feature to make it more useful for users, while giving experts real control over how they want to be represented \u2014 or not represented at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cOver the past week, we received valid critical feedback from experts who are concerned that the agent misrepresented their voices,\u201d he wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/shishirmehrotra_back-in-august-we-launched-a-grammarly-agent-activity-7437552603737059328-vzTe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">post on LinkedIn<\/a>. \u201cThis kind of scrutiny improves our products, and we take it seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cWe hear the feedback and recognize we fell short on this,\u201d he added. \u201cI want to apologize and acknowledge that we\u2019ll rethink our approach going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Whether the company\u2019s decision will calm the public outcry remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The feature left much to be desired, highlighting persistent pain points plaguing large language model-based tools like it. Even when author and copy editor Benjamin Dreyer <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/bcdreyer.social\/post\/3mgap7bggvk24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">copy-pasted paragraphs of lorem ipsum<\/a>, which is dummy placeholder text commonly used in graphic design, the feature offered him tips from writers including the venerable novelist Stephen King.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The company seemed to want it both ways \u2014 to benefit from the implication of an association with prominent writers while distancing itself in the fine print. A disclaimer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.platformer.news\/grammarly-expert-review-reviewed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spotted by <em>Platformer<\/em>\u2018s Casey Newton<\/a> buried deep in the company\u2019s documentation hedges that references from these experts \u201care for informational purposes only and do not indicate any affiliation with Grammarly or endorsement by those individuals or entities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Nonetheless, the company\u2019s use of people\u2019s names without their sign-off became a bitter flashpoint in the AI discourse.
