As the band get ready to bring their 2026 Fragile tour to the UK, we\u2019ve worked with them to bring you our Definitive Ultimate Music Guide to Yes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Alongside the in-depth reviews and classic interviews, this new edition features extensive new material. There\u2019s an exclusive new interview with Steve Howe<\/strong>, Geoff Downes<\/strong> and the other members of the band about how they manage their present-day aspirations with their classic back catalogue. The band also take us through their personal picture gallery, commenting on their extensive guitars, early bands, and historic trousers (\u201cspectacular\u201d, in case you were wondering) as they go.<\/p>\n

Fragile<\/strong> marked the moment when Rick Wakeman<\/strong> joined Yes, bringing his unique mixture of classical allusion, sensitive arrangement, and rock \u2018n\u2019 roll chops to the band. Rick, of course, is one of the voices in the new feature we have for you detailing the making of the Fragile classic \u201cRoundabout\u201d but is also on hand to provide a thoughtful introduction to the magazine. Who aged 21 would perceive the downside of being invited to join David Bowie\u2019s band? Interestingly, Rick did \u2013 and his wry account of his subsequent ascent to the top with Yes is a vindication of his decision.<\/p>\n

As far as ambitions for his solo career went, however, they seem to have been limited to the acquisition of a spectacular American car.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy solo work wasn\u2019t planned,\u201d he tells us. \u201cThat was a no-choice syndrome. When A&M signed Strawbs, they signed us individually \u2013 I didn\u2019t know what I\u2019d signed. Anyway Nov 1971 off Yes go to America playing all sorts of places, 5th<\/sup> on the bill, driving round in an estate car, life is a ride\u2026I was with an amazing band. We were at the Hyatt House in LA, [Yes\/Wakeman manager] Brian [Lane] said we need to go to A&M records, because Jerry Moss wants to see you.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe go down there, and he said, \u201cWe think Yes is going to be a substantial band in the years to come, so we\u2019d like to take up the option of you doing a solo record for us\u2026What do you think?\u201d Brian, typical manager, said, \u201cDoes he get an advance?\u201d Jerry said, \u201cHow about we give you a gift? What would you like?\u201d Brian said \u201cHow much can he spend?\u201d \u201cHow about $1000?\u201d I said, \u201cThere\u2019s a car lot on Sunset Strip, and in there there\u2019s a 1957 Cadillac limousine and it\u2019s $975.\u201d\u00a0 So in the space of an hour I now owned a 1957 Cadillac limousine\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
