For years now, large language model-based chatbots have lured users into intimate relationships \u2014 romantic affairs enabled by tech that\u2019s surprisingly adept at tapping into your psyche with a sycophantic tone that can be irresistible.<\/p>\n

On one end of the extreme, things can spiral into danger<\/a> when conversations with an AI partner go off the rails. Researchers also warn that AI companionship can lead to people feeling more depressed and lonely<\/a>. On the other end of the spectrum, some users have claimed that their AI paramours can have a far more positive impact on their lives \u2014 even allegedly saving a real-world marriage<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Even celebrities are seemingly being seduced by the digital personalities. That\u2019s at least according to a persistent, months-old rumor making the rounds online once again.<\/p>\n

It all started during a December \u201cI Need You Guys\u201d podcast episode<\/a>, hosted by Hollywood insiders Jenny Slate, Max Silvestri, and Gabe Liedman.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is an actor who is currently in a romantic relationship with his AI chatbot,\u201d Silvestri dished to episode guest Kumail Nanjiani, a famed actor and comedian.<\/p>\n

Over the following months, the celebrity world has been hunting down the identity of the purportedly \u201cnear A-list\u201d celebrity TV actor, with gossip website Deuxmoi<\/em> reposting the clip<\/a> this week and once again launching the controversy into the stratosphere.<\/p>\n

As BuzzFeed<\/em> points out<\/a>, hundreds of fans started pointing fingers at Zach Braff, actor of \u201cScrubs\u201d fame \u2014 who almost immediately denied it, though he did add an intriguing wrinkle to the rumors.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not dating a chatbot,\u201d he wrote in an Instagram post on Thursday<\/a>. \u201cI can\u2019t believe I have to type these words. It\u2019s a storyline in an upcoming ep of \u2018Scrubs.\u2019 Maybe it came from that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot sure,\u201d he added. \u201cBut not me. Love, The guy not dating his chatbot. Please update all gossip sites.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like now is a good time to be kind to people,\u201d Braff concluded, along with a photo of Nanjiani.<\/p>\n

So if it isn\u2019t Braff, who has been on the minds of fans since his medical sitcom returned for a tenth season last month, who could it possibly be?<\/p>\n

The December episode that sparked the controversy provided frustratingly little info. At the time, Silvestri claimed to have heard the rumor from \u201cother\u201d people, claiming that the unnamed actor \u201cbrings the chatbot with him\u201d to events, but knows how \u201cweird\u201d it is.<\/p>\n

While the identity of the chatbot dater remains unknown, Silvestri hinted that it\u2019s \u201cas near A-list as TV can get you,\u201d spinning the rumor mill into overdrive.<\/p>\n

Worst of all, Silvestri texted Slate, Liedman, and Nanjiani the name without revealing it. Nanjiani appeared to be particularly amused, exclaiming \u201cperfect, perfect, perfect,\u201d after a prolonged belly laugh.<\/p>\n

Users on the r\/fauxmoi celebrity gossip subreddit expressed certain reservations. One user pointed out<\/a> that all three podcast hosts are \u201cin the entertainment industry\u201d and \u201cgossiping about an actor dating a chatbot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is so incredibly awkward,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n

Others suggested that Braff\u2019s response to rumors he had been dating a chatbot could be part of a \u201cguerrilla marketing<\/a>\u201d campaign for his show.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could easily believe this was all a set up,\u201d wrote<\/a> another user, who claimed to have worked in marketing. \u201cOr, if I was a celebrity, I would consider planting silly stories like this when projects my friends or I worked on come out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore this, I didn\u2019t know about this podcast or that \u2018Scrubs\u2019 was back,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n

Some further stoked the fire by throwing new hats in the ring, including actors Jason Segel<\/a> and David Harbour<\/a> \u2014 neither of whom has addressed the allegations. The former was recently engaged to dancer and actress Kayla Radomski, while the latter was recently spotted on the celebrity dating app Raya<\/a> after his high profile divorce from singer Lily Allen.<\/p>\n
