In its early days, Twitter alternative Bluesky tried to paint itself as a safe haven from the onslaught of AI, promising in November 2024<\/a> that it had \u201cno intention\u201d of scraping user-generated posts to train AI models.<\/p>\n

It was a shot across the bow, clearly aimed at its rival X-formerly-Twitter, which had recently changed its terms of service<\/a> to allow just that. And since then, backlash to AI slop and relentless AI integrations has grown to new heights<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So it shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise that Bluesky\u2019s abrupt foray into AI isn\u2019t sitting well with its notoriously anti-AI user base.<\/p>\n

Specifically, the company\u2019s chief innovation officer Jay Graber, who stepped down as CEO earlier this month<\/a> to focus on \u201cexploring new ideas\u201d at the company, announced a new AI app called Attie<\/a> at a conference over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Attie, which interim CEO Toni Schneider referred to as a \u201cnew product\u201d that\u2019s \u201cnot part of the Bluesky app\u201d in an interview with TechCrunch<\/em><\/a>, allows users to essentially vibe code their own custom feed using natural language prompts \u2014 or even build their own Bluesky app alternative on top of the service\u2019s Atmosphere protocol, an ecosystem of interoperable social applications.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou control it, you shape it, without having to write code or know how to set up these feeds,\u201d Schneider enthused.<\/p>\n

The CEO seemed well aware of the headwinds against launching consumer-facing AI products in 2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an AI product, but it\u2019s an AI product that\u2019s very people-focused,\u201d he told TechCrunch<\/em>. \u201cWe think AI is a very powerful technology, but we want to make sure that we use it to build things that really benefit people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe think AI should serve people, not platforms,\u201d Graber told audiences at this weekend\u2019s announcement. \u201cAn open protocol puts this power directly in users\u2019 hands.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, given the immediate reactions to the new app, it may struggle to catch on.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks, we\u2019re good, no need to explain it further,\u201d one user replied to Graber after she announced<\/a> it in a Saturday post.<\/p>\n

\u201cCool!\u201d another added<\/a>. \u201cHow do we block it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMe, looking for who the f*** wants this,\u201d reads the caption of a meme<\/a> a different user posted, showing a woman standing on a ladder and gazing into the distance.<\/p>\n

Graber appeared to be aware of the inflood of hatred for the idea. When a user told her that \u201cwe don\u2019t want it,\u201d she replied<\/a> with a curt: \u201cthen don\u2019t use it \u2014 it\u2019s a separate app.\u201d<\/p>\n

Graber also reshared a post<\/a> by a different user who claimed people \u201con the left\u201d were being \u201cshortsighted\u201d by being willfully blind about AI, and that the argument \u201c\u2018hope it goes away\u2019 doesn\u2019t have a great track record as a strategy for contesting control of new political domains and technologies.\u201d The implication: Bluesky users are wrong about their resentment over AI and should instead embrace it.<\/p>\n

Schneider told TechCrunch<\/em> that the company is still considering how to monetize its latest feature, and that a fee for using Attie, which is currently in private beta, is on the table.<\/p>\n

But considering the outrage the app\u2019s announcement has wrought, it\u2019s unclear at best if any serious numbers of users are jumping to use it \u2014 even if it\u2019s free, which could turn Attie into an expensive distraction<\/a> and a largely ineffective way to draw new users in.<\/p>\n
